NGC 2460 .SAS1..-Mixed-type morphology in HST F606W with a weak asymmetric dust
structure in the bulge region that is overlaid on an otherwise smooth light
distribution. We label this bulge as unclassified. The decomposition gave a
value of 3.5 +/- 0.32 for the Sersic index and 6.6" for the bulge radius. Within
this region the velocity dispersion profile is flat and h_3_ and h_4_ moments
scatter around zero.

NGC 2460. This galaxy is classified as a non-barred galaxy in RC3, but clearly
has an elongated inner structure at r< 10 arcsec, detected as a bar-like
structure in the q and {phi} profiles and in the Fourier analysis. As the
position angle of this structure deviates even by 25{degrees} from that of the
main disc, it might be a weak secondary bar.

NGC 2460. Decompositions for this galaxy have been made previously by Carollo et
al. (1997), by BBA98 and by Peng et al. (2002), which offer interesting points
of comparison with our decomposition. BBA98 used a 1D method with a Sersic
function for the bulge, and applied their method to profiles from photographic
plates which had a large enough field of view for reliable estimation of the
radial scalelength of the disc. They found that the exponential disc is either
very weak or absent. On the other hand, Carollo et al. used optical HST images
and an R^1/4^ law function for the bulge; they comment that this galaxy most
probably has a small bulge. The most sophisticated analysis for this galaxy was
made by Peng et al., who applied a multicomponent 2D decomposition method to a
high-resolution HST image. Including a bar, a bulge and a disc in the solution,
they obtained B/T= 0.41, which is very similar to B/T= 0.38 found in this study.
This corresponds to a typical ratio for an Sa-type spiral (Simien & de Vau
couleurs 1986). We also fitted the bar, but it appeared to be unimportant for
the obtained B/T ratio.

This galaxy has many scattered nuclear spiral features that do not
maintain sufficient coherence to be classified as anything but a
chaotic spiral.

NGC 2460 forms a wide pair with IC 2209 (Scd; Markarian 13) at an
angular separation of 5.3'. The redshifts are v_o(2460) = 1592 km/s
and v_o(IC 2209) = 1503 km/s, giving a projected linear separation of
48 kpc using a redshift distance of 31 Mpc (H = 50).
The outer arms, of the NGC 210 type, are of exceedingly faint
surface brightness, shown in the high-contrast print here. A tightly
wound multiple-spiral pattern exists in the inner region, burned out
on this print.
A candidate for a dE,N nucleated dwarf elliptical companion is
present at the upper-left border of the print, seen in projection near
the end of one of the outer arms. However, this faint,
low-surface-brightness galaxy is equally probably in the background,
as its morphology is not precisely like prototype dE galaxies (Sandage
and Binggeli 1984).

the Sab section (panel 111). It is illustrated again
here to show the difference in the smoothness of
the arms between the Sb galaxies in this section
(with their higher current star-formation rate)
and the Sa and Sab types.
NGC 2460 forms a pair with IC 2209 at a
separation of 5.3'. Details are described in the
Sab section on panel 111.
