NGC 210. This galaxy has a bar whose surface brightness is high in
comparison with that of the underlying disc, which is dominated by an
outer pseudo-ring. Because of the prominent bar, it is not possible to
perform any reliable decomposition for this galaxy without also
modelling the bar (which in blue light is a well-known SAB-type oval).
However, the prominence of the outer ring made decompositions
problematic. In fact, this is true for outer-ringed galaxies in

NGC 210.---(R)SB0/a: Strong bulge threaded by thick, high-contrast bar
with visible ansae at the ends. Faint outer ring (not obviously a
spiral pattern) with star-forming knots.

NGC 210: the HII regions trace very well the arms and the inner
ring. Our two methods are in agreement with the literature values
and thus we keep the mean of our values.

NGC 210 - SN 1954R: one patch is clearly visible at the northern edge of
the ring; it is very blue in both colors. Classified as a candidate (see

NGC 210 (Fig. 1, middle).--H II regions line the prominent R'_2_ outer
pseudoring. There are also a few interarm H II regions. The oval bar region has
a clear spiral pattern of H II regions (see expanded image in Fig. 12). The
dust lanes in the oval (see Sandage 1961 and Sandage & Bedke 1994) are on the
inner sides of the H{alpha} arms. The bright central emission is not ringlike.

NGC 210 is the prototype of a grand design spiral that has two
sets of spiral arms, one near the center that is tightly wound and an
outer set that is more open. Examples of this pattern have been
described in previous sections where it is called the NGC 210
look. Particularly good examples in the SBa section are NGC 2962
(panel 93), NGC 5377 (panel 96), NGC 1326 (panel 100), NGC 5701
(panels 100, 101, 104), NGC 1291 (panels 100, 102, S8), NGC 1358
(panels 100, 107, S8), NGC 1543 (panels 100, 102), NGC 5101 (panels
100, 101, 103), and NGC 2217 (panels 101, 104, 107).
The inner lens of NGC 210 has a high surface brightness, making
the inner set of tightly wound arms difficult to trace on the prints,
both here and in the Hubble Atlas. The same original 200-inch Palomar
plate was used for both representations.
NGC 210 may form a loose group with NGC 178, NGC 187, NGC 207,
and IC 41.

Strange and interesting object.
Represents a galaxy with seperate outer arms and not of type SB.
In the outer arms there are lots of small, compact HII regions.
Photo : Sandage - the description of this photograph agrees
with the one given to us by PA.

This is a nice example of the classification type Sb as well as
the fact that Sandage notes the amorphous nature of inside
branches and (c) of the outer branches.

Extremely bright nucleus in bright isolated lens:
1.3 arcmin x 0.75 arcmin with dark lanes.
2 main detached filamentary, partially resolved arms.
Pseudo (R):
4.1 arcmin x 2.2 arcmin.
Paired with a small anonymous SBb (= Holm 014a)
7 arcmin [north-following]

This is the type example for the four galaxies shown on
the page. Each of the four galaxies has two sets of spiral
arms. The inner set is tightly wound around the nucleus
and is not resolved into stars or knots. The outer set is
open and well defined, and is usually partially resolved.
The inner lens is of high surface brightness but contains
spiral structure. In this sense the group resembles NGC 5055.
Note the two prominent dust lanes in the nuclear
region. The outer spiral arms in this galaxy are branched
as in M101.
