Re:NGC 2551
NGC 2551 is an Sa galaxy. A dimmer galaxy at a comparable optical redshift, UGC
4390, lies ~14.4^'^ (~146 kpc) to the northeast of NGC 2551. Neither galaxy
appears to be visibly disturbed in the optical. We detected both NGC 2551 and
UGC 4390 in H I, as well as the relatively faint galaxy PGC 2755603, which has
no previously reported optical redshift (Figs. 5 and 6). At a spatial resolution
of ~20 kpc (Fig. 6), the H I disk of NGC 2551 appears to be disturbed, with this
disturbance especially prominent in the first-moment map (kinematics). The
observed disturbance in the H I disk is even more prominent at an angular
resolution of ~10 kpc (Fig. 5), but not easily apparent in the channel maps
(Fig. 7). By comparison, UGC 4390 does not appear to be disturbed in H I at
either spatial resolution, althougH It is possible that the H I kinematic axis
is not aligned with the optical major axis (the optical major axis is poorly
defined in the outer regions of this galaxy). PGC 2755603 was not spatially
resolved in H I. It is not clear whether the observed disturbance in NGC 2551
was caused by tidal interactions with (one of) these or other galaxies.

Re:NGC 2551
NGC 2551. - This disk system, type SA0/a, was seredipidously observed
in a UIT pointing centered on Z Cam. In the MUV (Fig. 23b), the galaxy has
a bright nucleus and a moderately bright disk showing clumpy structure.

NGC 2551 has a small angular diameter
(isophotal diameter of 1.9' to the level of 25 mag
sec^-2^). It is well resolved into spiral arms on the
original plate. The classification of S0/a in the
RC2, based on a Lick 36-inch Crossley plate, is
inappropriate.
The spiral arms are narrow and well
defined. The pattern is midway between grand
design and MAS because two main arms can be
traced. Although the arms break into fragments,
the fragments are far fewer than in NGC 488 or
in NGC 1288, shown on this panel.

According to [HMS 1956] this is an Sab.
Radial velocity = +2,452 km/sec.
On the whole red.
