Re:NGC 3511
NGC 3511. Part of a H I sample of bright southern Seyfert galaxies
studied by Becker et al. (1988) and also studied in H I by Bottinelli et
al. (1985). Its radio continuum has also been observed by Niklas et
al. (1995) and it is part of a sample of galaxies studied for H_2_0
maser emission by Greenhill et al. (2002).

Re:NGC 3511
NGC 3511.---SABbc: Fairly weak bulge with evidence for a double
nucleus. Bulge is elliptical, but the galaxy is at high inclination,
so this may be a projection effect. Two-armed grand-design spiral
pattern emerges from the bulge. Arms are very diffuse, thick, and
patchy. There are knots, but none are very prominent. At low surface
brightness there are short bits of other arms.

Pair [with NGC 3513]

NGC 3511 forms a close pair with
NGC 3513 (SBc; panel 299) with a separation of
10.5'. The redshifts are v_o(3511) = 951 km/s
and v_o(3513) = 845 km/s. At the mean redshift
distance of 18 Mpc (H = 50), the projected linear
separation is small, at 55 kpc.
The surface brightness of the spiral pattern
overlaying the entire disk is very high, as shown
in the print at the upper left. A lighter print from
the same plate is shown at the lower left.
The arms are massive in the sense of
Reynolds (1927a,b). The pattern is similar to
that in NGC 2427 (Sc; panel 269) and NGC 4088
(Sc; panel 271) although slightly less

The image here is made from the same plate
used for the print above, but printed more thinly
to show the spiral pattern and the associated
heavy dust lanes that are predominantly on the
insides of the heavy luminous arms.

Re:NGC 3511
Extremely small nucleus or star. Suggestion of SAB structure in center.
Complex, knotty, massive arms with dark lanes.
Non-interacting pair with NGC 3513 at 10.8 arcmin.

The pattern of NGC 0253 and NGC 3556 is repeated in this galaxy.
Notice the very small nucleus and the ill-defined spiral arms.
