NGC 4527.---SABab: Small, bright elliptical bulge. Outer bulge
isophotes are irregular, possibly due to extinction. Prominent
grand-design two-armed spiral pattern, with the arm origin slightly
offset from the bulge major axis. Arms are fairly broad, even in the
inner region and show a great deal of patchy/filamentary structure.
System is close to edge-on, so foreshortening is a problem, but the
arms appear to continue for at least 180deg before fading. The arms,
and the interarm regions, are rich in star-forming knots.

NGC 4527. NVSS detected a 178 mJy source, 151 mJy were detected in the
Green Bank survey and FIRST reports a 74 mJy source; the radio source
displays resolution effects. 1.4 GHz, 54" resolution observations
(Condon 1987) detect a 214 mJy source. While 0.2" resolution, 15 GHz
observations of Nagar et al. (2000) give an upper limit of 1.1 mJy to
any small-scale emission, the high-resolution observations of Vila et
al. (1990) show a small (<2) core (1.1 and 4.2 mJy at 5 and 1.4 GHz,
respectively) and east-west extended emission (73 and 24 mJy at 5 and
1.4 GHz, respectively). The annulus-like extended emission, roughly
aligned with the galaxy major axis, is suggestive of star formation in
the disk.

NGC 4527.-Vila et al. (1990) find S_20 cm_^peak^ = 4.3 mJy beam^-1^
and S_6 cm_^peak^ = 1.3 mJy beam^-1^ at resolutions of ~1.3" and ~1.4",
respectively (a spectral index, {alpha}_6_^20^, of about -1.1). The 20
and 6 cm maps are both highly extended (P.A. 65^deg^) along the major
axis of the galaxy, with an edge-brightened morphology, suggestive of an
annulus (Vila et al. 1990). We did not detect this galaxy at 2 cm.

NGC 4527.-The M/L in the disk region is almost flat or slowly increases
outward. In the bulge region it decreases inward from r = 2 kpc to
500 pc. Then it turns to increase steeply toward the center.

NGC 4527: Double peaked nuclear PV feature is clearly visible both in
the H{alpha} and [N II] line emissions, indicating a rapidly rotating
disk of R ~ 4". The [N II] PV diagrams show a broader, and more steeply
rising component of rotation near to the nucleus within the central
~ 2". The rotation velocity then decreases to a minimum at R ~ 15", and
increases to a flat part from R > 25". A detailed analysis of the PV
diagrams and CO line data is presented in Sofue et al. (1998).

NGC 4527 is a prototypical Sb similar to
M31. It is in the Virgo Cluster Catalog but is
about 5^deg^ south of subcluster B centered on
NGC 4472, and 10^deg^ south of subcluster A near
NGC 4486. Its redshift is high at v_o = 1738 km/s,
not necessarily meaning that the galaxy is in the
background given the complex kinematic pattern
and the high velocity dispersion of the Virgo
Cluster region (Binggeli, Tammann, and Sandage
Many HII regions exist in the thin,
moderately regular arms, the largest of which
resolve at about the 2" level.
Much dust exists in the disk, well seen in
silhouette against the near side of the bulge,
causing the characteristic asymmetric luminosity
profile between the near and the far side in the
highly inclined disk.

A fine, rather bright spiral 5' x 1.2' in p.a. 70^deg^; nucleus sharp; some
evidence of absorption ef1'ect on the north. A nova appeared in this spiral
