NGC 4710. - We detect about 6 mJy of weak disk emission associated
with this H II nucleus. NVSS measured a 19.3 mJy source. At 1.49 GHz,
Condon et al. (1990) measure 17.2 and 14.7 mJy at 15" and 5" resolution,
respectively. The data imply a resolved steep-spectrum radio source.
We also detect a 4.8 mJy resolved background source, 2.5' to the
east of NGC 4710. No identification could be found on the POSS.

This famous galaxy has bright ansae and a presumed internal dust
ring. The print of NGC 4710 here is made from a different original
Mount Wilson 100-inch plate than was used in the Hubble Atlas. The
faint outer envelope mentioned in the Hubble Atlas cannot be seen on
The form of the image is a more extreme case (the internal dust
ring is more opaque) of the similar but more-subtle variation of
intensity inside the ansae in NGC 4215 (S0_2_, panel 47) and NGC 4111
(S0_2_ panels 47, 53).
NGC 4710: This edge-on S0 displays a very bright ring and an important
equatorial dust lane. The class of the envelope is somewhat uncertain,
between thD and spH.

The unusual feature of an internal absorption band and
bright ansae on the central lens would be produced if
NGC 3032 (pg. 5) or NGC 4459 (pg. 5) were seen on edge.
Consequently, NGC 4710 is classified as an S03 on edge.
A faint outer envelope can be traced to 160 sec from
the nucleus, corresponding to 70 mm on the illustration.
This short exposure show only the lens and fairly small
nucleus surrounded by a heavy ring of dark material, and
bright ansae, being the edge-on view of an incomplete ring
or incipient spiral arms.
Bright, narrow spindle 3.5' long in p.a. 28^deg^. Nucleus is very faint. There
is a curious irregular absorption lane extending along the middle for 0.5' on
each side of the nucleus. See Abs. Eff. 7 s.n.
