Re:NGC 5689
NGC 5689 is an almost edge-on barred galaxy with a box-shaped bulge (Lutticke et
al. 2000). It is the brightest non-interacting member of a group formed by NGC
5682, 5683, and 5693 (Giuricin et al. 2000). The unsharp-masked image displays a
dust lane ~5 arcsec south of the nucleus. The stellar kinematics show prominent
signatures of an inner, fast-rotating disc component (i.e. central increase in
rotational velocity, velocity dispersion drop and h_3_-V anticorrelation; see
also Falcon-Barroso et al. (2003)). The ionized-gas shows an elongated disc-like
distribution and fast rotation.

NGC 5689 is seen almost edge on. It has two
prominent dust lanes cutting across the large
central bulge and across the disk beyond the
bulge. A third lane exists immediately below the
first two on this print, but it is difficult to see
because there is little background light against
which it can be silhouetted.
The multiple lanes here betray the multiple
dust lane arms in the disk, similar to galaxies
such as NGC 7377 (panels 75, S14) and NGC
3619 (panel 75), which are seen more nearly
face on.

Re:NGC 5689
Very bright, diffuse nucleus in a bright bulge with a strong dark lane on one
side. Lens: 1.2 arcmin x 0.5 arcmin. Faint smooth outer whorls.
Non-interacting pair with NGC 5682 and NGC 5683 at 8.3 arcmin.
Non-interacting pair with NGC 5693 at 11.8 arcmin, plus others.
Brightest of a group.
Lund 9 dimensions are for the lens only.
