Re:IRAS 20486-4857
IRAS 20486-4857 (NGC 6970).---This galaxy has a small companion 1.9'
to its north (Lauberts 1982). Both NGC 6970 and its companion are
visible in the red continuum image, but the companion is absent in the
H {alpha} image. NGC 2970 has extended H{alpha} emission and numerous
knots in its spiral arms. The optical spectrum of this galaxy shows
H{alpha} in absorption rather than emission (Corbett et al. 2002b),
indicating a dominant old stellar population.

The angular size of this remote galaxy is
small, at 35". The redshift is v_o = 5207 km/s.
The two major spiral arms have very high
surface brightness. The arm pattern is of the
grand design, the arms being of the massive type.
