Re:NGC 4490
The Magellanic irregular NGC 4485 (at a distance of 9.3 Mpc) and the Sd spiral
NGC 4490 (at a distance of 7.8 Mpc) are interacting, and their morphologies are
distorted. There are three ULXs in NGC 4490, all located on irregular dusty
regions. Within the isophote of NGC 4485 is NGC 4485-ULX1 (IXO 62), located on a
dust lane. Its luminosity decreased steadily from 4 * 10^39^ to 1.5 * 10^39^
ergs s^-1^ between three observations separated by 600 days.
NGC 4501
NGC 4501 (M88) is a Sb spiral galaxy at a distance of 16.8 Mpc. ULX1 is an
extreme ULX with L_X_ ~ 15 * 10^39^ ergs s^-1^. This ULX is
located on a spiral arm and showed a luminosity drop from 15 * 10^39^ to
8 * 10^39^ ergs s^-1^ between two observations separated by half a year.

Re:NGC 4490
NGC 4490.---SBm: System close to edge-on. Center of
system is knotty. No nucleus, or bulge. Open, diffuse spiral
arms emerge from central area but quickly fade into the
ambient disk. disk is very knotty, with obvious dust lanes
and patches. Outer disk isophotes are irregular, with abrupt
changes in P.A. Evidence for very LSB extensions of the
disk to the NW and SE.

Re:NGC 4490
A pair of F606W images of the highly inclined galaxy NGC 4490 was
available. From the nuclear offset (35" east and 20" south) for SN II
1982F (from the Asiago SN catalog), we derive a position for the SN near
the edge of the PC chip. SN 1982F occurred just outside the main body of
NGC 4490. The stars nearest the SN position have
m_F606W_ = 23.06 +/- 0.14, 23.32 +/- 0.18, and 22.92 +/- 0.07 mag. Given
the distance modulus (m - M = 29.46; Tully 1988), these correspond to
M_F606W_ = -6.4, -6.1, and -6.5 mag and are probably bright supergiant
stars.

Both components of this obviously interacting
pair show massive, robust star formation over
each of their faces. Individual stars begin to
resolve at about V = 18 in each galaxy, but the
surface brightness is so high over most of their
disks as to make the photometry of individual
stars difficult. Also there is much dust over the
face of NGC 4490, the brighter of the pair.
The redshifts listed in the RSA2 are
v_o(4485) = 817 km/s and v_o(4490) = 601 km/s.
The plate used for the heavy exposure at the
top left was taken by Baade with the Mount
Wilson 100-inch Hooker reflector.

The light print of the NGC 4485/4490 pair
at the bottom left was made from an original plate
taken by Baade with the Mount Wilson 60-inch
reflector.
The morphologies of the galaxies are abnormal,
presumably due to the close encounter.

Re:NGC 4490
Vol. VIII; Plate 36. These appear to be physically connected; 4485 is a bright
irregular oval 1' long. 4490 is 4' x 1.8' in p.a. about 112^deg^. Very bright,
with numerous almost stellar condensations; a very irregular spiral. See Abs.
Eff. 15 s.n.
