Re:Mrk 0008
Mrk 8: This galaxy has a striking and unusual optical and H{alpha}
morphology of clumps in an elongated ring (Bottinelli et al. 1975),
which has led it to be classified as a recent merger product. The
H{alpha} and short-wavelength radio maps show the same structure of
distinct clumps, which are labeled A, B, C, and D, starting with the
brightest clump in the northeast and proceeding counterclockwise. The
spectral index between 20 and 6 cm is about -0.7 for the galaxy as a
whole and -0.3 for clump A separately, indicating that there is some
nonthermal contribution and that it is mostly extended.
The spectral index map shows several optically thick regions around
A and much smaller ones on the other sources. But there is actually much
more optically thick emission than shows on the spectral index map. It
may be seen that the 6 and 2 cm maps look quite different in detail,
with the 2 cm peaks significantly displaced from the 6 cm, doubtless
because the 6 cm is suppressed by the high optical depth. But the 2 cm
peaks correspond to areas where the 6 cm map is weaker than 4 {sigma}
and so will not be recorded on the spectral index maps. The spectral
indices of each clump, calculated from their total fluxes, are strongly
positive and are +0.3, +0.8, +0.7, and +0.9 for clumps A, B, C, and D,
respectively. We have therefore treated each clump as an independent
optically thick source and have calculated its emission measure, source
size, ionization, and equivalent O star population in Table 5.

Re:MRK 0008
Mrk 8 -- Kunth & Joubert (1985) list this object as having a broad
He II {lambda}4686 excess above 0.8{sigma} of the background.
