Re:NGC 3258
NGC 3258: a circum-nuclear well defined dusty disk prevents the study of the
brightness profile for r<0.9". The innermost points of the profiles suggest the
presence of a flat core. The best fit value is found for _b_r_ = 1.15", i.e.
apparently the profile breaks before the edge of the disk. Forcing the value of
{gamma} to 0.3 requires a strong monotonic increase of dust obscuration toward
the center; at r<0.1" the surface brightness should be depressed by a factor
2.5, difficult to reach considering the presence of starlight in front of the
disk. These considerations suggest a classification as a likely core galaxy.

Re:NGC 3258
NGC 3258. There is obvious wispy, low-surface-brightness structure to the
north and north-west towards the edge of our CCD frame (at a distance of
~150 arcsec from the nucleus). The lower luminosity elliptical, NGC 3260,
lies ~4 arcmin from NGC 3258 in this direction, and it is possible that
there is some tidal interaction. The (B - V) colour becomes significantly
bluer at r ~ 50 arcsec on the major axis, but there is no comparable
effect in (V - I), and we suspect a 1 per cent error in {SIGMA}_B_(sky)
to be the cause of the apparent colour change. Like the nearby NGC 3268,
this galaxy has H{alpha} and NII nuclear emission (in spectra taken by
Boisson et al.). Roberts et al.(1991) cite an upper limit of 1.2 mJy to the
HI 21-cm flux.

NGC 3258 is one of the brightest members of the Antlia Group,
which has many members, including dE, Sm, and Im dwarfs (Ferguson and
Sandage 1990). The morphological type is that of a moderately
prototypical compact E1.
