Notes for object NGC 5238

6 note(s) found in NED.

1. 2007MNRAS.382.1552L
Re:NGC 5238
NGC 5238: Fig. 2 shows a very clumpy central structure. There is no clear
nucleus. The best candidate is source 1, which is marginally resolved. Spectra
of this source and of another dimmer optical knot located ~4 arcsec north from
source 1 were obtained. Source 1 shows strong emission lines, evidence for an
underlying star population, and a very blue continuum. Source 2 corresponds to a
pure star-forming region.

Re:NGC 5238
NGC 5238: This galaxy was observed for the first time in X-rays, and no
emission was detected in the ROSAT HRI data. A 2{sigma} upper limit for a
point source located in the nuclear region of the galaxy can be found in
Table 5.

Re:NGC 5238
NGC 5238: shows a relatively large excess in the surface brightness
profiles, as well as a flattening of its colour profile. the
characteristics of the excess and the colour profile are similar to
those of DDO 168.

Re:NGC 5238
As a blue compact object with strong H_{alpha}_ emission, NGC 5238 is
in the lists of Zwicky (1971) and Markarian (1967). Karachentsev (1972)
and Vorontsov-Velyaminov (1977) classified it as an interacting double
system. According to Karachentsev (1996), this dwarf galaxy, resembling
an intergalactic HII region, belongs to the outskirts of the group
around M 101. The mean colour index of NGC 5238 increases smoothly from
0.27 in the centre to _T_ = 0.40 within the faintest isophote,
which points out to the presence of an older stellar population in the
galaxy. Via the brightest three blue stars the galaxy distance modulus
is 28.57, exactly the same as the previous estimate by Karachentsev et
al. (1994). In determining the distance, we have not taken into account
the central bright starlike object with V = 18.27 and B-V = -0.44, which
may be the galaxy nucleus or a blue compact association.
