Re:NGC 0877
A6. NGC 877 NGC 877 (Fig. 1f) is a late-type spiral galaxy paired with
NGC 876, a spiral galaxy 2.1' (~31 kpc) to the southwest. These two
galaxies are also members of a group that includes NGC 870 and NGC 871.
The H{alpha} image of NGC 877 shows numerous knots distributed along the
two spiral arms, which appear slightly disturbed. It is interesting that
there are several pairs of relatively bright H{alpha} sources located at
nearly opposite positions with respect to the nucleus; this is a
phenomenon seen in several grand-design spirals without bars (Rozas et
al. 1998). The pair of brightest sources located at the ends of the two
spiral arms is a typical example. The H{alpha} emission from the nucleus
is much fainter than that from the spiral arms.

Re:NGC 0877
0215+143 (NGC 877). This galaxy is an inclined spiral, with dust lanes and
knots that are seen at all radii in the disk. It is probably similar to
2159-321. Essentially no knots are seen outside the disk. The bluest knots lie
in the inner part of the galaxy, but none is very blue, as in all objects in
the sample.

NGC 877 is the brightest galaxy in a field of
other Dreyer galaxies (NGC 870, 871, 876, and
877) within 12' of each other. It seems likely that
at least some of these form a physical group. The
v_o redshifts c similar at 3830 km/s for NGC 871
(low-surface-brightness Sc at 8.4' separation),
4006 km/s for NGC 876 (edge-on SO_3_?
at a separation of 2.2'), and 4010 km/s for
NGC 877 itself. At the mean redshift distance of
79 Mpc (H = 50), the projected linear separations
of NGC 871 and NGC 876 from NGC 877
are 193 kpc and 50 kpc, respectively.
The arms in NGC 877 are semi-massive in
the sense of Reynolds (1927a,b). The arm
pattern is of the grand design, although not
prototypical.
