3C 78: this dataset has been previously analyzed by Trussoni et al.
(1999) and Rinn et al. (2005). The results presented here are in
agreement with those obtained by Rinn et al. (2005), while the presence
of a FeK{alpha} line in the X-ray spectrum of the source was not tested
by Trussoni et al. (1999). It is worth considering, that the
significance of the iron line detected here is, accordingly to F-test,

3C 78. The spectral analysis of a BeppoSAX observation of this source
(January 1997) supports the presence of non-thermal emission, but
without the estimate of the spectral index (Trussoni et al. 1999). If we
assume {alpha}_x_ = 1.0 we get a flux of {approx}1.5 x 10^-13^ erg
cm^-2^ s^-1^, corresponding to a value of the luminosity expected from
the radio core emission.

3C 78 (NGC 1218). - Sparks et al. (1995) recently discovered an optical
synchrotron jet in this radio source with the WFPC2 image presented here
(Fig. 14). The jet lies at a P.A. of ~ 50^deg^ and is roughly 0.6 kpc in
length. The nucleus is unresolved, and the host galaxy is smooth with no
morphological peculiarities. Several globular clusters are visible in
the galaxy's halo.

3C 78.--This is an isolated, small elliptical galaxy of FR I morphology. Baum
et al. (1988) report that the innermost emission-line gas is elongated roughly
in direction of the radio jet but also shows a broad curve tail to the
southeast, perpendicular to the radio axis. The HST R-band image (F702W)
displays a rather normal elliptical with no obvious peculiarities, not even
twisted isophotes. However, the enlargement of the nuclear region shows an
extension (0.5" in length) to the northeast (also seen in the F370LP image) and
a strange distortion (two peaks just offset east of the very bright nucleus).
The extension is likely the optical synchrotron jet discussed by Sparks et al.
(1995). They claim that the jet is similar but smaller in structure than that
of M87. Apparently the coincidence between radio, emission-line gas, and
optical morphology is remarkable. Unfortunately the F220W-FOC image has a poor
signal-to-noise ratio but some structure is visible. Although it does seem to
have a faint nuclear source (the PSF contribution is 17+/-4, and the total
F220W magnitude is 17.95), there also appear to be some blobby UV components
surrounding the nucleus, which are east, west, and south of the nucleus. The
broadband U image (F370LP) shows the underlying galaxy, an unusually bright
nucleus (for an elliptical galaxy), and an extension of the nucleus to the

0305+03 (3C 78). This is an S0 galaxy. From our VLA observation the
core is well resolved, while part of the extended structure is lost.

to be typical of early-type galaxies.
