NGC 1387. We extracted the spectrum from a 2' (11 kpc) aperture. Only one
hot gas component (kT = 0.65 keV) was needed. Using ROSAT, Jones et al.
(1997) measured Z_Fe_ = 0.25^+0.47^_-0..12_, in agreement with our
results, even though these authors omitted a component to account for
point-source emission, which contributes ~35% of the flux in our
extraction aperture.

This galaxy is an excellent example of a very early type barred galaxy. Although
classified as type SAB in RC3, Pahre (1999) and BCO06 adopted an SB type. The
Q_b_ family from Paper II is AB, indicating that the bar is indeed weak. NGC
1387 has no spiral arms, but the surface brightness profile at r = 30" - 90" is
perfectly exponential, which is a strong sign of a disk. In the decomposition we
fitted, besides the bulge and the disk, the bar/lens for which one single
function was used. Subtraction of the bulge model from the original image showed
that this galaxy has a prominent nuclear ring at r = 6" (Fig. 5), which also
appears as a faint peak in the {epsilion}-profile (Fig. 2). The ring is nearly
circular and has a significant size compared to the length of the bar. In the
surface brightness profile the bulge and the disk appear as two nearly
exponential functions.

NGC 1387 is close to the center of the
Fornax Cluster (Ferguson 1989). The elongation
of the bulge within the extended, nearly circular,
very faint outer envelope is the feature necessitating
the SB classification. The envelope is
definite and pronounced, characteristic of the S0
class. The envelope is best seen here by viewing
the print at a distance and moving the head or
eyes rapidly.
There is a suggestion of a globular clusters in
the envelope, seen in the main print.
