NGC 1395.-Galactic absorption is present but there is little H_2_ absorption
(about 10^17.5^ cm^-2^), and there is no evidence of Galactic O VI emission,
which would be difficult to detect in this short observation. The strong O VI
line from NGC 1395 would lie at 1037.84 A, a fairly clean part of the spectrum;
there is only an upper limit to this line (Fig. 3).

NGC 1395 is an isolated, moderately compact, normal E2 galaxy
whose redshift is v_o = 1664 km/s.

The H{alpha}+[NII] image reveals slightly extended line emission peaked
on the nucleus. Neither our image nor our spectrum confirms the large
extent of the emission-line region reported by Trinchieri & di Serego
Alighieri (1991). The B-I image does not reveal obvious dust absorption.
Since this galaxy has been detected by IRAS at 60 and 100 microns, we
expect the dust to be in a face-on distribution (cf. also the symmetrical
distribution of the ionized gas, Trinchieri & di Serego Alighieri 1991)
Shells revealed in residual image (see also Malin & Carter 1983). Radio
and X-ray source.

NGC 1395: The emission region is almost round in the centre and peaked
at the nucleus. NGC 1395 is a well-studied elliptical which is both an X-
ray source (Canizares et al. 1987) and a shell galaxy (Malin & Carter
1983). H{alpha}+[N II] images have also been obtained by TdiSA and Shields
(1991). Lauer (1985) and Veron-Cetty & Veron (1988) found the stellar
light to be regular with no optical evidence of dust, though our
continuum image suggests there may be a tenuous major-axis dust lane.
