1974ApJ...189..399W The Polarization of Normal Galaxies at Radio wavelengths J.F.C. Wardle, and R.A. Sramek NRAO, Green Bank, West Virginia Abstract The integrated linear polarization of 13 elliptical and four spiral galaxies has been measured at 2695 and 8085 MHz. The spiral galaxies are all weakly polarized, Among the elliptical galaxies, those with compact "active" radio sources are weakly polarized, while those with extended "passive" radio sources tend to be quite strongly polarized. There may also be a tendency for the less-flattened systems to be "passive" systems, and for the "passive" systems to have their magnetic field aligned along either the major or minor axis. The observed depolarization of NGC 6047 implies a density of interstellar ionized hydrogen of about 2 x 10^-4^ cm^- 2^.
