1974ApJ...193....1R Empirical Properties of the Mass Discrepancy in Groups and Clusters of Galaxies. III. The Page and Jenner Samples of Close Double galaxies. Herbert J. Rood Astronomy Department, Michigan State University, East Lansing Received 1974 March 13 Abstract Page's sample of double galaxies shows a strong correlation between the ratio of "best guess" virial mass to luminous mass (M_{vt}/M) and virial velocity disperson (V). (M_{vt}/M) is not significantly correlated with virial radius R, nor is V with R. A simple analysis indicates that these results are not produced by projection effects. The correlation between M_{vt}/M and V applies also to Jenner's sample of double supergiant galaxies, and to double systems in which one component is the dominant galaxy of a "solar-system-type" group.
