1987ApJ...312L..11J Interstellar dust in Shapley-Ames elliptical galaxies M. Jura, D. W. Kim, G. R. Knapp, and P. Guhathakurta Abstract. The IRAS survey data have been co-added at the positions of the brightest elliptical galaxies in the Revised Shapley-Ames Catalog to increase the sensitivity over that of the IRAS Point Source Catalog. More than half of the galaxies are detected at 100 microns with flux levels indicating, typically, 10 to the 7th or 10 to the 8th solar masses of cold interstellar matter. The presence of cold gas in ellipticals thus appears to be the rule rather than the exception. Key words: COSMIC DUST, ELLIPTICAL GALAXIES, GALACTIC STRUCTURE, INTERSTELLAR MATTER, ASTRONOMICAL CATALOGS, INFRARED ASTRONOMY, INFRARED ASTRONOMY SATELLITE, INTERSTELLAR GAS, SPACEBORNE ASTRONOMY
