1988A&A...200...21C Parameter estimates for the orbits of M 32 and NGC 205 about the centre of mass of the M 31 system J. Cepa and J. E. Beckman Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias, E-38200 La Laguna, Tenerife, Spain Received June 22, 1987; accepted February 8, 1988 Summary. We have used simple kinematic, dynamic and geometrical assumptions to infer the orbital parameters of M 32 and NGC 205 about M 31. We find that both galaxies rotate in a retrograde sense compared to M 31 indicating a possible common origin independent of the mother galaxy. Their periods, each ~ 10^8^ yr, and their orbital radii, ~ 12 kpc, are comparable, while the inclinations of their orbital planes are -95^deg^ for M 32 and 122^deg^ for NGC 205, with respect to the plane of M31. Key words: galaxies: elliptical - M 32 - NGC 205
