1988A&A...202L...5B Rotating and counter-rotating cores in elliptical galaxies R. Bender Landessternwarte Konigstuhl, D-6900 Heidelberg, Federal Republic of Germany Received April 12, accepted June 10, 1988 Summary Rotating and counter-rotating cores are found in 4 elliptical galaxies. It is argued that rotating cores might exist in a large fraction of elliptical galaxies. Possible explanations of counter-rotation are merging of galaxies or counter spin-up of the galaxies' outer regions due to interactions in the early stages of galaxy formation.
