We present the results of a search for CO emission in twelve blue compact galaxies made with the IRAM 30m telescope (beamsize =23"). None of them was detected; the upper limits to the CO luminosities of these objects are about eight times lower than what was previously achieved. For an ensemble of spiral galaxies and giant irregulars detected in CO, we find that there is a correlation between the ratio of the CO luminosity over the H I mass and the average metallicity of the galaxy. Thus, metal-poor galaxies are expected to be less bright in CO. We suggest that the low CO brightness of dwarf galaxies is mainly due to a CO abundance deficiency, combined to optically thin CO emission.
