1988AJ.....95.1389S A CATALOG OF LOW-SURFACE-BRIGHTNESS OBJECTS. I. DECLINATION ZONE +20 ^DEGREES^ JAMES M. SCHOMBERT Palomar Observatory, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, California 91125 GREGORY D. BOTHUN Astronomy Department, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48109 Received 11 January 1988 ABSTRACT Plates from the second Palomar Sky Survey are used to compile a list of low- surface-brightness objects located along declination zone +20^deg^. Coordinates, descriptions, sizes, and ellipticities are presented using the same selection criteria of 1 arcmin limiting diameter as the Uppsala Catalog of Galaxies (Nilson 1973). Lists of previously known galaxies with new low- surface-brightness features (i.e., tails, bridges, shells, etc.) and interesting low-surface-brightness objects with diameters between 0.5 and 1 arcmin are also presented. As expected, the low-surface-brightness end of the luminosity function is dominated by late-type systems and dwarfs. Comparison with CCD surface photometry indicates an average limiting surface brightness of 26.0 B mag arcsec^-2^ for this survey as compared to 25.2 B mag arcsec^-2^ for the UGC (Cornell et al. 1987). On the whole, we have found too few new low- surface-brightness galaxies for the space density of these objects to be higher than that defined by conventional disk galaxies.
