TEERIKORPI University of Turku Received 1987 February 27; accepted 1987 October 23 ABSTRACT Several critical statements which have been made about our work on the Malmquist bias in the Tully-Fisher relation are examined; they are shown to be unjustified and to rely on a misconception of the bias or on a misunderstanding of what we have done. It is emphasized that (1) photometric distances such as those obtained from the TF relation are affected by a strong bias; (2) properties of galaxies, when they are established from a sample whose distances are affected by a bias, are a priori suspected to be influenced by the bias and should not be taken as intrinsic ones; (3) the safest way of determining an unbiased value of the Hubble constant is to restrict to unbiased data. Both field and cluster samples, when restricted to unbiased data, lead to H_0_ = 72 +/- 3 km s^-1^ Mpc^-1^, with the primary calibration of de Vaucouleurs.
