COSMOLOGY FROM A GALAXY GROUP CATALOG. I. BINARIES

ABSTRACT
A new, completely objective groupfinding algorithm is described
and applied to the CfA redshift catalog. The binary galaxies are
isolated for analysis. The assumptions underlying our analysis are
(1) that light traces mass, (2) that our binary galaxy subsets
are representative light tracers, and (3) that the binary orbits are
circular. The primary result of our work is that the resulting
biasfree binary catalogs are a function of the assumed cosmological
model. For virtually any input value of {OMEGA}_0_ in the range
0.015.00 there is a reasonably consistent interpretation of the CfA
survey such that the specified value of {OMEGA}_0_ can be derived
from the binary sample obtained under that interpretation. A secondary
result is that the higher the input value of {OMEGA}_0_, the broader
the intrinsic distribution in M/L, and hence the less valid the
assumption that light traces mass.
