1988ApJ...330..121T OPTICAL POLARIZATION OF SEYFERT GALAXIES IAN B. THOMPSON Mount Wilson and Las Campanas Observatories of the Carnegie Institution of Washington AND P. G. MARTIN Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics, University of Toronto, and Lick Observatory, University of California, Santa Cruz Received 1986 September 26; accepted 1987 December 18 ABSTRACT We have made measurements of the optical continuum polarization of 19 Seyfert galaxies. The polarization of nine of these has also been observed at H{alpha}; for six of these the emission-line polarization is at least as high as in the adjacent continuum, suggesting that a scattering mechanism produces the polarization. For Seyfert galaxies for which this is the case, there is a strong tendency for the electric vector of the polarization to be aligned with the major axis of the galaxy, indicating that the symmetry of the scattering geometry is related to the large-scale structure of the galaxy. However, the few objects in which the emission-line polarization is low appear not to show any preferred alignment. We also consider the alignments of radio structure with various observables. Whether or not specific alignments are found depends generally on the definition of the sample being studied. Subject headings: galaxies: Seyfert - polarization
