Busarello Osservatorio Astronomico di Capodimonte, via Moiariello 16, I-80131 Napoli, Italy Osservatoiro Astronomico di Padova, vicolo dell'Osservatorio n.5, I-35100 Padova, Italy Landessternwarte Konigstuhl, D-6900 Heidelberg, Federal Republic of Germany Received August 15, accepted August 22, 1989 Summary We present a correlation between the isophotal-shape parameter {alpha}_4_/{alpha} (Bender et al. 1989a) and the ultraviolet (UV) color index (1330 A-V) (Longo et al. 1989): boxy galaxies are found to be UV brighter than disky galaxies. The interpretation of the correlation between Mg_2_ and the UV color suggested by Burstein et al. (1988; hereafter BBBFL) is also discussed. Our results add further evidence to the fact that the {alpha}_4_/{alpha} parameter reflects evolutionary and structural differences between two physical groups of E galaxies (Bender et al. 1989a, 1989b), and give some support to the interpretation of the ultraviolet excess in terms of recent star formation.
