Saanich Road, Victoria, British Columbia V8X 4M6, Canada Received 24 January 1989; revised 17 March 1989 ABSTRACT H I line profiles have been obtained for a sample of 37 galaxies. Thirty of these galaxies have IRAS fluxes representing a wide range of infrared luminosities and spectra. The galaxies also represent five levels of optical activity: nonactive, LINERs, H II galaxies, Sy 2, and Sy 1. They also have a wide range of tidal interaction activity with other galaxies. The purpose is to study the behavior of H I within the scenario that relates tidal events with star formation, dust formation, IR luminosity, and nuclear activity in galaxies. A strong correlation is found between H I and IR luminosity, which appears to be in the form of an excess of H I emission related to the interaction events. Detached weak extra H I components are common, and H I absorption components are seen in several objects. H I outflow is indicated in most cases. Relative velocities are of the order of a few hundred km s^-1^. The most strongly disturbed galaxies also have peculiar H I profiles. A fit to the Tully-Fisher relation indicates a mean extinction of ~1 mag for the group, and a general spread in the relation with no systematic effects.
