1989AJ.....98.1563C IRAS LOW-RESOLUTION SPECTRA OF GALAXIES MARTIN COHEN Jamieson Science and Engineering, Inc., 5321 Scotts Valley Drive, Suite 204, Scotts Valley, California 95066 and Radio Astronomy Laboratory, University of California, Berkeley, California 94720 KEVIN VOLK NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, California 94035 and SETI Institute, 2035 Landings Drive, Mountain View, California 94043 Received 11 April 1989; revised 9 June 1989 ABSTRACT We have sought and extracted the spectra of external galaxies from the IRAS Low-Resolution Spectrometer (LRS) database. Twenty-one objects present viable spectra. One is a peculiar, star-forming ESO galaxy. The remainder are all starburst or H II region galaxies. Their average spectrum demonstrates the importance of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission bands in the 8-23 micron region and reinforces the conclusion reached from ground-based spectra that there is a strong correlation between the PAH bands and the starburst or H II region character of a galaxy.
