1989ApJ...345..713B THE ORIGIN OF THE OPTICAL POLARIZATIONS OF SEYFERT 1 GALAXIES GRAHAM BERRIMAN Steward Observatory, University of Arizona Received 1989 January 6; accepted 1989 April 13 ABSTRACT This paper presents a nonparametric statistical analysis of how well the optical polarizations of 68 Seyfert 1 galaxies (including five so-called narrow emission line X-ray galaxies) correlate with their emission-line and broad-band infrared properties. The polarizations correlate with narrow H{alpha}/H{beta}, nuclear 12 micron and possibly 25 micron luminosities, with the nuclear IRAS color {nu}F_{nu}_(25 microns)/{nu}F_{nu}_(60 microns), and possibly with {nu}F_{nu}_(12 microns)/{nu}F_{nu}_(60 microns) and {nu}F_{nu}_(60 microns)/{nu}F_{nu}_(100 microns). The polarizations do not correlate with the broad line reddening indicators H{alpha}/H{beta}, Pa{alpha}/H{alpha}, [O III] {lambda}5007/H{beta}, and L_x_(2-10 keV)/H{beta}, measures of asymmetry in the [O III] {lambda}5007 line, the 3.5 micron, 60 micron, and 100 micron luminosities, and the nuclear {nu}F_{nu}_(12 micron)/{nu}F_{nu}_(3.5 micron) and {nu}F_{nu}_(12 micron)/{nu}F_{nu}_(25 micron) ratios. These findings indicate that the polarization predominantly arises from scattering and extinction by the dust that steepens the narrow Balmer decrements and which radiates most of its luminosity at 12 microns and 25 microns. Models of a nonthermal origin for the 12-100 micron light are not supported by this analysis, except possibly in a few cases that we identify.
