1990A&A...230...81L Supernova studies III. The calibration of the absolute magnitude of supernovae of type Ia B. Leibundgut and G.A. Tammann Astronomisches Institut der Universitat Basel, Venusstrasse 7, CH-4102 Binningen, Switzerland European Southern Observatory, Karl-Schwarzschild-Strasse 2, D-8046 Garching bei Munchen, Federal Republic of Germany Received August 7, accepted September 2, 1989 Abstract. The distance of the Virgo cluster, the most reliable milestone of the extragalactic distance scale, is used to calibrate the peak luminosity of supernovae of type Ia which have been observed in the cluster. Mean absolute magnitudes of M_B_(max) = - 19.79+/-0.12 and M_bol_ = - 19.9 corresponding to 2.8 10^43^ erg s^-1^, have been derived. The luminosity, which shows only small scatter between individual SNe Ia, is in perfect agreement with a variety of different determinations.
