1990A&A...236....9T Supernova studies IV. The global value of H_0_ from Supernovae Ia and the peculiar motion of field galaxies G. A. Tammann and B. An all-sky sample of 35 SNe Ia beyond 1000 km s^-1^ and with well determined m_B_ (max) are used to establish a Hubble diagram. With M_B_(max) = -19.79 +/- 0.12 from SNe Ia that occurred in the Virgo cluster (r = 21.9 Mpc) the diagram yields H_0_ = 46 + 10 (external error) km s^-1^ Mpc^-1^. This value is independent of any adopted recession velocity of the Virgo cluster; it applies at an effective distance of ~2500 km s^-1^ and therefore must be close to the global value. The scatter about the Hubble line is small, limiting the streaming velocities of field galaxies to ~500 km s^-1^ over typical scales of 80 Mpc, and the luminosity scatter of SNe Ia to <= 0^m^.25. SNe Ia are therefore exceptionally good standard candles. The importance of future data on SNe Ia is stressed.
