1990A&A...236..149T Supernova studies V. The luminosity function Of Supernovae Of type II G. A. Tammann and A. Schroder Astronomisches Institut der Universitat Basel, Venusstrasse 7, CH-4102 Binningen, Switzerland European Southern Observatory, Karl-Schwarzschild-Strasse 2, D-8049 Garching bei Munchen, Federal Republic of Germany Received December 19, 1989; accepted January 21, 1990 Abstract. A minimum-bias sample of 23 nearby SNeII is used to derive their luminosity distribution. It is well represented by a Gaussian with <M_B_(max)> = - 17.2 (H_0_ = 50) and {sigma}_M_ = 1.2. The faintest object of the sample, SN 1987 A, can be drawn from the normal distribution, without the necessity of postulating many additional faint SNe, although some faint objects may have been missed. The low mean luminosity of SNeII tends to increase previous estimates of their frequency. Key words: supernovae, luminosities - supernovae, types - supernovae, frequencies
