1990A&A...239...50K Quasar redshifts and nearby galaxies K. C. Karlsson Uppsala Astronomical Observatory, Box 515 S5-751 20 Uppsala, Sweden Received May 5, accepted November 24, 1989 Abstract. It is shown that quasars close on the sky to low redshift galaxies show a higher concentration toward peaks in the quasar redshift distribution than do quasars in general. Various tests of the significance of the effect yield roughly equal results, corresponding to significance levels of a few times 10^-3^ for individual samples and about 10^-5^ for a combination of two independent samples of quasars close to galaxies. The result is confirmed by a third independent sample of quasars. It is concluded that selection effects probably cannot explain the difference, which instead might indicate the existence of different types of quasars. Key words: quasi-stellar objects - redshifts
