1990A&AS...86..429C Photographic and CCD surface photometry of 33 early-type galaxies in the Virgo cluster. I. The data N. Caon, M. Capaccioli, and R. Rampazzo Scuola Internazionale Superiore di Studi Avanzati, Trieste, Italy Osservatorio Astronomico di Padova, Padova, Italy Osservatorio Astromonico di Brera, Milano, Italy Received November 23, 1989,; accepted June 5, 1990 Abstract -- We present a new detailed photometric mapping of 33 early-type galaxies belonging to the Virgo cluster. These are all the E and S0 galaxies brighter than B_T_ ~ 14 mag which are contained within two 6^deg^ x 6^deg^ fields centered at Dec.= 11^deg^30', and R.A.= 12^h^22^m^ and R.A.= 12^h^36^m^ respectively. The study is based on B-band CCD and large-field photographic material. The final light profiles cover typically a range of ~ 10 mag, with an overall accuracy of +/-0.1 mag up to 26 B-mag arcsec^-2^. The geometrical characteristics of the isophotes have been studied with the purpose of disentangling the presence of a faint disk, if any. The contribution of the bulge alone has been separated from that of the whole galaxy. Comparisons with previous studies are presented and discussed. The astrophysical interpretation of the global properties of the sample, partly anticipated in Capaccioli and Caon (1989) and in Capaccioli, Caon and Rampazzo (1990), will be presented in forthcoming papers. Key words: galaxies: elliptical - galaxies: lenticular - galaxies: structure of
