Received 1989 June 27; in original form 1989 April 17 SUMMARY We present data for 19 Sbc galaxies mapped with the VLA at 20 and 6 cm and a resolution of 1-2 arcsec, and a further nine galaxies detected only at 20 cm. Those with a central radio flux density > 5 mJy were selected from previous observations of our sample of 100 Sbc galaxies. Although most are dominated by a compact nuclear component, six show evidence of extended emission with compact features, reminiscent of starburst galaxies. Spectral indices are typically those expected from synchrotron emission. Radio luminosity functions for the central components of the galaxies are presented. Comparison of the total energies and magnetic field strengths of the compact components with those seen in a sample of Seyfert galaxies show that the distributions are similar. Possible implications are discussed.
