1992A&A...255...87C Carbon monoxide in active galaxies R. Chini, E. Krugel, and H. Steppe Max-Planck-Institut fur Radioastronomie, Auf dem Hugel 69, W-5300 Bonn, Federal Republic of Germany IRAM, Avda. Divina Pastora 7, Nucleo Central, E-l8012 Granada, Spain Received March 27, accepted July 6, 1991 Abstract. We present CO (1-0) and (2-1) observations towards the central region of 18 active galaxies taken from the Markarian catalog. By comparing the two lines obtained at the SEST and the MRT we find: a) The molecular gas is strongly concentrated towards the center of these galaxies. b) The (1-0)/(2-1) line ratio for the same area on the galaxy is typically 2 with the notable exception of Mkn 617 where the (2-1) line is much stronger than the (1-0) line. c) The 1.3 mm dust emission and the CO (2-1) luminosity Leo give compatible values for the gas mass M_gas_ if one uses for the conversion: M_gas_/M_sun_~ 4 L_CO_. A proportionality factor of about 3 is suggested by calculations of radiative transfer for model clouds that could be expected in an active nucleus. Key words: active galaxies
