1992A&A...257..575A Upper limit to the 45-MHz flux density of SN 1987A H. Alvarez, J. Aparici, J. May, and F. Olmos Departamento de Astronomia, Universidad de Chile, Casilla 36-D, Santiago, Chile Received June 12, accepted September 12, 1991 Abstract. Since 1987 we have been monitoring the supernova SN 1987A with the large 45-MHz array of the University of Chile. We have used two techniques based on the assumption that the object will exhibit scintillation when its radiation gets through. Using the most comprehensive theory available about radio supernovae and assuming that SN 1987A would behave like some of the few well studied cases we calculated that the object should be detectable by our telescope within the first two years since the explosion. So far we have not detected the supernova establishing an upper limit of 5 Jy for its flux density. The failure to detect the object at a higher flux density, as predicted, could be attributable to its peculiarity or/and to a deficiency in the theoretical model.
