Turatto Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory, Ashtarak Region, Armenia Osservatorio Astronomico di Padova, Vicolo Osservatorio 5,I-35122 Padova, Italy Received August 9, 1991; accepted February 1, 1992 Abstract. The far-infrared properties of two sample of IRAS detected spiral galaxies, the parent galaxies of SNe and the RSA galaxies with no detected SN, are investigated. The Multivariate Factor Analysis shows that the FIR excess, log(L_FIR_/L_B_) and the FIR spectral indices {alpha}^25^_60_ and {alpha}^60^_100_, which are known to be tracers of the SFR, are correlated neither to N_II+Ib_, the number of Type II and Ib SNe, i.e. the SNe with massive progenitors, nor to the morphological type and to the presence of the bar. The FIR parameters are independent also of the blue luminosity of the galaxies, suggesting that different ranges of mass dominate the optical and the FIR bands. On the other hand, we find that galaxies with larger FIR excess and steeper spectral indices have lower rate of SN (II + Ib). This along with the two correlations between the total H{alpha} + [N II] galaxy emission and the SNII rate (Kennicutt 1984), and between the blue luminosity, L_B_, and the number of SN, N_II+b_, pointed out also by our analysis, implies that the SNII are associated with the cooler component of the FIR radiation of galaxies and, hence, that the masses of their progenitors are restricted between 5 and 10 M_sun_. Nevertheless, considering its statistical nature, the present work does not exclude that part of SNII descends from more massive stars. The small number of SNIb prevents us from reaching analogous results for their progenitors while no significant relation is found between the FIR parameters and the rate of SNIa.
