1992A&AS...92..583F The mass-to-light ratio in spiral galaxies D.A. Forbes Institute of Astronomy, Cambridge CB3 OHA, UK Received March 18; accepted June 28, 1991 Abstract. - The galactocentric variation of the dynamical mass-to-light ratio for a large sample of field and Hickson compact group spirals has been examine in a systematic way. The majority of galaxies in our sample do not have a constant M/LR, but rather one that increases with radius. The gradient in M/L_R_ between 0.2 and 0.6R_25_ is correlated with total luminosity, in that faint galaxies have a higher proportion of dark matter at large radii. The absolute value of M/LR at 0.5R_25_ is consistent with early type spirals having more dark matter. Higher metallicity gas is found in galaxies with a deeper gravitational potential.
