Dottori Instituto de Fisica, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Cx.P. 15051, CEP 91500, Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil Observatoire de Marseille, 2 Place Leverrier, 13248 Marseille, Cedex 4 Received June 10; accepted August 26, 1991 Abstract. - The distribution of HII regions in 11 spiral galaxies is analysed through 2-D Fourier transform following Kalnajs' method (Kalnajs 1975; Considere & Athanassoula 1982,1988). A first result obtained with this method is the major axis position angle P.A. and the inclination w of the galaxies. The decomposition of the deprojected HII regions distribution shows that NGC 224 (M31) is dominated by a one-armed spiral component, NGC 2997 by a three-armed one, and the rest by two-armed spirals. The pattern of the giant and supergiant HII regions, with regard to that of all regions within a given galaxy, is obtained by weighting the position of each region with its respective diameter. A method based on the variation of the pitch angle with the radial distance has been idealized to obtain the leading or trailing character of the arms. The classical relation between arm winding and morphological type is discussed. Key words: galaxies: spiral - structure - image processing.
