Keel, and E.T.M. van Soest Sterrewacht Leiden, Postbus 9513, NL-2300 RA Leiden, The Netherlands Received September 2; accepted November 22,1991 Abstract. - We examine the pairing properties of starburst Markarian Galaxies, through study of the environments of 516 non-Seyfert Markarian galaxies in a redshift-bounded sample, supplemented by new spectra and redshift measures for possible companions. In agreement with previous studies, we find that these galaxies are exceptionally likely to occur in tight pairs. Using a likelihood-ratio criterion, we find that 33% of them are in pairs (compared to only 7% of a magnitude-limited set of disk systems). This fraction rises only slightly (to 36%) if confirmed double-nucleus and merging systems are included. The Markarian galaxies are distinguished by being systematically the brighter members of pairs, by 0.66 magnitude in the mean (with a very large spread). A simple two-component model suggests that this reflects mostly starburst brightening in the Markarian galaxies. We use available optical (absolute magnitude, nuclear H{alpha} luminosity) and far-infrared (60 micron power) data to compare global star-formation characteristics of the paired galaxies, in which much of the star formation seems to have been externally triggered, with the more isolated systems. We are unable to identify any clear differences in the global character of star formation between isolated and paired Markarian systems. Interactions can apparently trigger bursts of star formation but exercise little influence on their properties once triggering has occurred. Some implications for mechanisms of induced star formation are discussed. Key words: ppgalaxies: starburst - galaxies: spiral - galaxies: interactions.
