1992A&AS...95..489J CCD surface photometry for E and S0 galaxies in the Coma cluster I. Jorgensen, M. Franx and P. Kjaergaard Copenhagen University Observatory, Oster Voldgade 3, DK-1350 Copenhagen, Denmark Center for Astrophysics, 60 Garden Street, Cambridge, MA 02138, USA Received September 25; accepted February 4,1992 Abstract. - We present CCD surface photometry for 46 elliptical and S0 galaxies observed in Johnson B and Gunn r filters. Thirty-three of the galaxies belong to the Coma cluster. The data are the first in our study of large-scale motions in the universe and the physical background of the Fundamental Plane". The CCD images have been analyzed using a full model fitting technique giving radial profiles of local surface brightness, color, ellipticity and position angle. The residuals relative to the elliptical isophotes of the best fitting model have been described quantitatively by Fourier expansions. Many of the galaxies show deviations from the perfect ellipses on the level of 0.5-1%. For all galaxies we have derived effective radius, mean surface brightness and total magnitude by fitting a de Vaucouleurs r^1/4^-law. A characteristic radius r_n_ similar to the recently introduced Dn has been derived. Global colors (B - r) and for half of the galaxies also observed in Gunn v (v - r) have been determined. Also, color gradients are derived. The agreement of the photometry and the global parameters with data from Faber et al., Dressler, and Burstein et al. is very good, with a mean zero point difference for the magnitudes of only 0.006^m^ and a scatter of 0.054^m^. This confirms that the quality of the CCD data is fully adequate for studies of the large-scale motions in the universe and investigations of the "Fundamental Plane". Key words: galaxies: elliptical and lenticular - clusters of galaxies: the Coma cluster - elliptical galaxies: photometry, isophotal structure, global parameters
