NED Abstract

Copyright by Royal Astronomical Society. 1992MNRAS.259..425S Colour-selected IRAS galaxies - a comparative investigation of their radio properties Hazel Sopp, and Paul Alexander Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory, Cavendish Laboratory, Madingley Road Cambridge CB3 0HE Astronomy Unit, Queen Mary and Westfield College, Mile End Road, London El 4NS Accepted 1992 May 19. Received 1992 May 18; in original form 1992 March 13 ABSTRACT We report the results of VLA observations of two complete samples of IRAS galaxies, one `normal' and the other selected to have warm FIR spectra similar to those of Arp 220 and other ultraluminous infrared galaxies. We find that these samples are indeed significantly different in the sense that the colour-selected galaxies have more centrally condensed, higher surface brightness, and flatter spectrum radio emission in common with high-luminosity IRAS galaxies. Their FIR/radio ratios are consistent with a star formation origin for the radio emission. Key words: galaxies: active - galaxies: Seyfert - galaxies: starburst - infrared: galaxies - radio continuum: galaxies.
