Box 800, NL-9700 AV Groningen, The Netherlands Institute "Anton Pannekoek", University of Amsterdam, Kruislaan 403, NL-1098 SJ Amsterdam, The Netherlands Kiso Observatory, Institute of Astronomy, The University of Tokyo, Mitake-mura, Kiso-gun, Nagano-ken, 397-01, Japan Received December 11, 1992; accepted February 2, 1993 Abstract. - We present the results of far-infrared imaging observations of 258 regions of 12' x9' each centered on a selected individual galaxy, a close pair, or a compact group of galaxies mapped at 50 and 100 micron wavelength with the CPC instrument of the IRAS satellite. The CPC instrument has a significantly better resolution than the IRAS Survey instrument at these wavelengths, i.e. a round beam with a FWHM of about 80" at 50 microns and 95" at 100 microns, respectively, intended to be matched to the diffraction limit of the telescope at 100 microns. The maps were made using a new algorithm to correct for gain variations, which gives better results than the one used previously for the images made available on tape in 1985. Of 262 objects observed, 167 and 188 were detected at 50 and 100 microns, respectively, about 85% of the galaxies from the same sample listed as detected by the Survey instrument in the IRAS Point Source Catalog. For all 55 galaxies resolved (i.e. with a FWHM major axis diameter exceeding 1.6 times the beam FWHM and/or extended lower-level emission) by the CPC we also present the averaged maps at 50 and 100 microns. These 55 objects include 35 for which there are no published maps obtained with the IRAS Survey instrument. We rescaled the flux densities of the published CPC maps using the more accurate IRAS Survey instrument data, since the absolute flux density calibration of the CPC is only accurate to about +/-60%. We also present images of a triplet of galaxies associated with a single Survey point source, which were resolved into separate sources by the CPC.
