1994AJ....108..837S A SEARCH FOR CO (1-0) EMISSION FROM THE TIDAL STRUCTURES OF INTERACTING AND MERGING GALAXIES BEVERLY J. HIGDON National Radio Astronomy Observatory, Array Operations Center, Socorro, New Mexico 87801 Electronic mail: jhigdon@boots.aoc.nrao.edu Received 1994 March 24; revised 1994 May 6 ABSTRACT We have used the NRAO 12 m telescope to search for CO (J = 1-0) emission from the tidal tails of six merging or interacting galaxies. Although these plumes are H I-rich and several contain star forming regions, they are undetected in CO to low levels. The lack of strong CO emission from these plumes in conjunction with the presence of massive star formation is reminiscent of the situation in dwarf irregular galaxies, and the CO/HI limits are consistent with those of dwarfs. The low CO brightness of these plumes may be due either to a low proportion of molecular gas, or to a high N(H_2_)/I_CO_ conversion factor.
