We present observations of a sample of compact steep-spectrum sources at {lambda}18cm with MERLIN and VLBI, and at {lambda} 6cm with MERLIN and the VLA. A comparison of their structural properties shows that they are generally similar to the more extended sources in the same luminosity range. However, because they are of subgalactic dimensions, they could provide useful information on the properties of the medium in the host galaxy with which the radio components are interacting. The polarization information from the VLA {lambda} 6cm observations shows that these sources are weakly polarized, possibly due to Faraday depolarization by the medium. There is also marginal evidence that the outer radio components in these sources are more asymmetrically located than the larger sources, suggestive of a dense inhomogeneous environment within the host galaxies.
