Henkel Onsala Space Observatory, S-43992 Onsala, Sweden Max-Planck-Institut fur Radioastronomie, Auf dem Hugel 69, D-53 121 Bonn, Germany Received 10 January 1995 / Accepted 11 April 1995 Abstract. We have observed the {lambda}1250 micron flux in 8 elliptical galaxies using the MPIfR 7-channel bolometer system attached to the IRAM 30-m telescope. Five of the galaxies are detected at more than 3{sigma}, two are tentatively detected and for one we obtained an upper limit. For two of the detected galaxies, the CO(2-1) line makes a significant contribution to the measured {lambda}1250 micron flux. A comparison of the {lambda}1250 micron fluxes, corrected for the CO(2-1) line contribution, with IRAS 60 and 100 micron data shows that there is a cold dust component (T_d_ <~ 20 K) in two of the ellipticals. The other galaxies have {lambda}1250 micron fluxes consistent with a one- temperature component, with T_d_ typically between 20-30 K.
