1995AJ....109..928H GALAXY COMPANIONS TO QSOs AT z = 2.3 J. B. HUTCHINGS Dominion Astrophysical Observatory, NRC of Canada, 5071 West Saanich Road, Victoria B.C. V8X 4M6, Canada Electronic mail: hutchings@dao.nrc.ca Received 1994 June 24; revised 1994 November 9 ABSTRACT R-band images have been obtained with FWHM ~0.6 arcsec of seven QSOs at z = 2.3. Only one of the QSOs is radio loud. In all cases evidence is found for an excess of 6-19 galaxies, rising to magnitude R = 23, in a ~1 arcmin (100 kpc) region around the QSO. Overall, the excess is significant at > 5 {sigma} level. Many of these galaxies are compact and have low central condensation. It is suggested that these are compact groups of young galaxies in starburst or post-starburst phases, which merge and evolve to become less evident at lower redshifts.
