1995AJ....109.1546R ON THE EXCESS OF PHYSICAL COMPANIONS AMONG SEYFERT GALAXIES P. RAFANELLI AND M. VIOLATO Department of Astronomy, University of Padova, Vicolo Oaservatorio 5,35122 Padova, Italy Electronic mail: piraf@astrpd.pd.astro.it A. BARUFFOLO Osservatorio Astronomico di Padova, Vicolo Osservatorio 5,35122 Padova, Italy Received 1994 September 21; revised 1994 November 16 ABSTRACT The results of a search for close companions in two magnitude limited samples (m_B_<~ 15.5) of 99 Seyfert 1 and 98 Seyfert 2 galaxies are presented. It is found that there is an excess of physical companions in both samples of galaxies, compared with two control samples of normal field spiral galaxies. The calculated lower limit percentages of physical companions are (12+/-3)% and (12+/-4)% for Seyfert 1 and Seyfert 2, respectively, while the upper limits on the percentage of galaxies with physical companions are in the range (0%-5%) in both control samples. The excess is confirmed by analysis of the redshifts for all pairs found in the complete, magnitude limited [B(0) <= 14.5] CfA sample of Seyfert galaxies.
